What does IBC mean in a tote?

An intermediate reusable container (IBC) is a pallet-mounted, industrially grade reusable container used to store liquid and powder. IBCs also referred to as a tote, can be stacked up and are movable by pallet jacks or forklifts.

In many industrial and commercial applications, intermediate bulk containers are used to store and transport fluids and other materials. IBCs are often made of polyethylene and have a cube shape. They have a capacity of 275 gallons (1000 liters) or more and are equipped with a valve and a removable IBC tote cap for filling and emptying purposes.

It is important to properly cap an IBC tote in order to maintain the integrity of the contents and prevent any spillage or leaks. In this blog post, we will provide a step-by-step guide on how to cap an IBC tote properly.

What Fitting is on an IBC Tote?

A fitting is a piece of equipment that is used to connect two or more pieces of tubing or piping together. Fittings are typically made of metal, plastic, or rubber and can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The fitting on an IBC tote for IBC tote caps is a threaded fitting that screws onto the top of the IBC tote. This fitting is used to attach the cap to the IBC tote.

IBC Tote Lids Caps & Covers | What is the size of the cap on an IBC tote?

IBC tote caps and covers are important for keeping the tote's contents safe and secure. There are two standard sizes of caps - 6-inch and 9-inch - and the most common lid is the normal vented 6-inch screw cap.

Installing IBC Tote Lids and Caps

Step 1: Inspect the tote for any damage. Check the valve and cap for any cracks or wear and tear. If any damage is found, do not use the tote and contact the manufacturer for replacement parts.

Step 2: Clean the valve and cap with a clean cloth and allow it to air dry. This will remove any dirt, debris, or dust so that you can avoid contaminants from getting into the tote and its contents. This step is crucial to the long-term storage of the products within your tote.

Step 3: Fill the tote with the desired contents. Ensure not to overfill the tote, as this could cause damage to the valve or IBC tote cap. Leave some headspace so that you can easily screw on the cap without spillage.

Step 4: Screw the cap tightly until it is finger-tight. Do not over-tighten, as this could strip the threads or damage the gasket. Once the cap is finger-tight, use a wrench to give it an extra quarter turn. This will ensure that it is tight enough without being over-tightened.

Step 5: Inspect the area around the valve and cap for any leaks. If there are no leaks, you have successfully capped your IBC tote! If there are leaks, unscrew the cap slightly until they stop. Be sure not to over-loosen the cap, as this could cause spillage.

How long do IBC totes last?

The advantage of intermediate bulk containers is that they are reusable. It is also possible to maintain the IBC for years to come. It should be inspected at least twice every three years to meet safety standards. They allow products to be easily and safely packaged and allow you to ship or transport them easily.
